This series contains eleven bound volumes of minutes and agenda (1942-1966) of the Commission of American Missions, Division of American Missions, and the Division's Executive Committee. Minutes include resolutions; election and appointment of officers and staff; discussion of formation of departments; departmental, committee, and executive secretary reports; committee appointments; budget; and discussion and planning of division activities, programs, studies, publications and surveys. Also included are minutes from the Commission's organizational meeting, dated July 20, 1942. In addition, the series contains unbound Division Committee protocol minutes and agenda (1947, 1950-1955). These documents include revisions and handwritten notes. Protocol minutes are those that contain executive session minutes, exhibits, and reports which were not widely distributed. Boxes 6 and 7 contain minutes and agenda which were not included in the bound or protocol minutes. These items are from the Division of American Missions Executive Secretary's Office.

The National Lutheran Council (NLC) was formed on September 6, 1918 as a common agency of particpating Lutheran church bodies to administer domestic programs, publicize Lutheran activities and beliefs, and provide overseas emergency relief to areas devastated by World War I.
